Overview

Certificate in Public and Environmental Health (CPEH) is one year program organized by NIHS under the leadership of MOH- Directorate of Training and Professional Development.

Availability of competent and efficient human resources in the health sector is essential in the provision of the health services expected of the Government of South Sudan. A system that enhances the delivery of right quality and caliber of human resources through training is critical. This is particularly certificate holder of Public and Environmental health that are constantly in direct contact with the community.

Justification

The health sector has continuously evolved and in the process presented the health worker and in particular the public health officers with new challenges. The new challenges call for review of the approach to training to make this public and environmental health cadres relevant in meeting public health needs.

 Having certificate in public and environmental health will equip public health officers with basic skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the population in the different contexts they may find themselves in.

Therefore, training using a competence-based approach to work alongside other health professionals would narrow the gap in public health service delivery.

Course Objective

The program is to equip learners with competencies necessary to develop students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for providing quality public health services at all levels in the health sector in the Republic of South Sudan. The design and the content of the programme provides opportunities for students to develop prerequisite competencies to provide public/ community service and leadership and management for strengthening the public health system.

The programme will enable the graduate to achieve the following objectives at the end of the training period:

  1. Explain different concept used in pubic and environmental health
  2. identify different principles applicable in public health and environmental health
  3. use different principles in controlling system in public and environmental health
  4. Solve different problems affecting public and environmental health

After the programme a graduand will be able to:

  • Participate in enforcement of rules and regulations guiding the public and environmental health
  • Identification of appropriate and current methodologies applicable in health care and services delivery system in response to current trend in health
  • Undertake environmental management.
  • Implementation of strategies and policies applicable to public and environmental health
  • Management of available resources for health service delivery to enhance disease prevention and promotion of health.
  • Planning, implementation and coordination of public health project particularly those related to behavior change and communication at all levels.
  • Work alongside with other personnel as member of PHC team
  • Uphold code of ethic, regulation and as well as professional conducts
  • Conduct situational analysis of public and environmental health.  
  • Participate in training health personnel and public in all matters concern particularly public health.
  • Participate in continuous professional development.

ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Admission requirement

To gain admission into the Certificate in Public and Environmental Health course, a candidate must, first, satisfy the general requirements for admission to NIHS at a certificate level. In addition a candidate shall be eligible for admissions to the CPEH programme on meeting any of the following minimum qualifications:

Direct Entry:

A person may be admitted to the certificate programme via the certificate scheme if the person has:

Either: SSCE/O’level (or foreign equivalent) with at least 3 credits obtained in one sitting, and with at least a pass in Biology and Chemistry

OR: A Basic Course Certificate in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

A person may be admitted to the certificate programme via the certificate scheme if the person has:
